Minted from 1859-1909, the Indian Head Penny was one of the few coins used throughout the American Civil War. Designed by US Mint engraver James Longacre, the front of the coin pictures the goddess Libertas wearing a feather headdress, which was only worn by Native American men, thus why it became known as the “Indian Head” penny, despite historical inaccuracy. The back of the coin pictured a wreath of laurel leaves, until it was replaced with a wreath of oak leaves and a shield in 1860.
