In the height of World War II, the United States was still in an effort of ramping up production of munitions. Copper shortages caused the U.S. government to halt the production of copper pennies and switch to a steel and zinc alloy. In 1944, they resumed normal production of copper pennies using recycled bullets and shell casings; they kept the iconic copper color until November 12th, 2025 when the U.S. stopped production of the penny entirely.
