Ammonites are extinct cephalopods that used their chambered shell for buoyancy. As ammonites grew, they added new segments to their spiral shells, sealing off older, smaller chambers with thin walls called “septa.” This created the sectioned spiral appearance of their fossils. Some larger ammonite fossils can be found with large fatal bite marks from predators like Mosasaurs.
